Boys Don't 109

Hello there.
Another musical finding of Tenment! I've been digging this artist for a while though, but I haven't really heard all of his stuff, he is very productive, has shitloads of demos, EPs, and still releasing new. Who I am talking about? Toro y Moi of course!

Nothing new, Pitchfork (hipsters) has been fapping to his music since 2010, he's playing on most of the major alternative music festivals in the world, but most of listeners don't go any deep into his earlier stuff, and in my opinion, that's where you can find the best of his songs. Todays choice - '109'. Very lo-fi, very pleasant, little surf-like vibe, sounds like it was recorded on a tape, huh?

And why the title?
Because it sounds very similar to another delightful song which is following me recently. Chord progressions seems to be identical, maybe it's the voice - neither Toro y Moi nor Robert Smith has huge singing potential.
Judge, 'Boys Don't Cry':

Rip-off? Inspiration? Coincidence?
Doesn't matter, both of the songs are kick-ass.

  1. I very much enjoy the tape like sound. The 2 songs seem to me to be just very very slightly similar

  2. It's just the style of guitar. It has the same similarities that reggae songs might share.

    1. Agreed, guitar sounds very similar, and both songs are in the same key. Actually picked up my guitar and checked the melody by myself, two first chords are the same:
      Boys Don't Cry: A b c# D | D c# b A
      109: A b D b
And that's why them seemed similar to me.

  3. Not sure on the similarities but I suppose they are there, maybe I'm over thinking it.

  7. Awesome.
The song makes me feel like
A: I should own a Jeep just so I can blast this with the cap off on the way to the beach and...
B: (for reasons I don't understand) should be watching Surf Ninjas.

  9. There is actually a bit of similarities between the two. The beat of the two, although very faint in distinction are nearly similar in my ears.

It's cool that you found that out man, although I kinda liked 109 better than Boys Don't Cry.

  10. This guy is pretty good! The only minus I see in him is the "hipsterness" that he seems to have...
